Oh, Assclown...
Yesterday I was bemoaning the fate of The Death Wish Kid and typical of a world class assclown, The Assclown suggested that Bronson had been "luckier" than John Lackey. We have a word for that where I come from: nonsense.
Using The Assclown's definition of luck as "being what a picture can't control," which is fair...
Arroyo is second in the league in unearned runs, second in percentage of runs surrendered that are unearned, has the third-worst record in the league relative to his expected winning percentage, as calculated using James'pythagorean theorem of baseball, is 7th in DIPS (I don't understand why we wouldn't get into this) and 11th in ERC
Lackey is 36th, 36th 34th 14th and 22nd.
The Assclown will surely point out that Bronson has to bear some responsibility for those unearned runs, and he's right, but the fact remains that Lackey has been supported by a far superior defense.
Update: Assclown retorts that Anaheim's defense hasn't been that much better, but the fact remains, the Angels have committed 20 fewer errors and have a far better zone rating.
I would also like to point out that despite pitching in a more hitter-friendly park than Lackey, Arroyo has a better ERA and WHIP and a bunch of other good stuff.

As the spelling/typo law rears its ugly head yet again...
Anyway, of course he bears responsibilty for those runs. If you're going to get into DIPS, then you have to treat unearned runs as you would treat any other run. Here's the defensive efficiency ratings of the Angels and Sox through Friday:
AL ANA 4468 4024 1062 359 814 33 132 41 0.6898
AL BOS 4370 3919 1018 323 788 66 106 55 0.6868
They rank ninth and tenth respectively. So while the Angels have been superior, they certainly haven't been far superior. Remember that you're comparing a team with Johnny Damon in center to a team with Garret Anderson in center. The Sox are consistently better at third base as well. The rest are pretty much a wash.
Besides, unearned runs are a lousy measure of "luck". Someone drops a foul ball/would be third out, then give up five runs the old fashioned way, I'd say those are mostly the pitcher's fault. Without play by play data, which I'm too lazy to look up, the defense thing is pretty much a non-issue.
