The Death Wish Kid
I posted this on a now defunct site in late July:
Even if you're a Angels fan, you have to root for Boston righthander Bronson Arroyo, if only because he is, to my knowledge, the only player in baseball history named after Hollywood tough guy Charles Bronson.
He also is taking a strangle hold on the title of "Most Snake-Bitten Starter in Baseball." Last night, against an admittedly depleted Seattle line-up, he went 7, gave up 1 run on three hits and two walks and struck out 12. For his efforts Bronson was presented with a no decision in an 8-4 loss.
For the season, as a starter?

Seriously, why does this kid bother getting out of bed in the morning? Among pitchers with 90 or more IP, he's got the ninth best ERA in the AL and two wins in 15 starts. Now, I know that he is partly to blame for the 11 unearned runs scored off of him, but still...
Today brought more of the same. Our reigning Assclown gleefully points out that since the name change here at BSIAA, the Halos are undefeated, while the Sox have yet to taste victory. Despite all this, the Angels are currently third in the wild card race.

Here is a link to current run support totals. Arroyo isn't doing well, but is a lot luckier than a lot of other guys, including 2002 game 7 hero John Lackey. He really doesn't have a lot to cry about, other than playing for team that hasn't won a world series in about 85 years.

And his ERA as a starter is now 4.11. That includes the recent loss to the White Sox, against whom the Red Sox will play next weekend, while I'll be in attendance. Although I don't really care for the White Sox, or any Chicago team for that matter, I'll be pulling hard for the South Side Hit Men.

In his four other starts since I wrote that, the Sox scored 32 runs, so his total RS has risen about half a run.
As for the comparison to the aptly named John Lackey, I would ask you to explain to me how a guy with an ERA of 4.14 and a 5-8 record has been "luckier" than guy with an ERA of 4.87 and a 9-10 record.

Luck being what a picture can't control. In that respect (without getting into DIPS), Arroyo has been luckier. He's been unlucky in the sense that he hasn't pitched to the score very well (in the event that pitching to the score is possible), but there are at least 10 pitchers that would love to have his bad "luck", including Kelvim Escobar. Seriously, I don't think a lot of pitchers are weeping for a guy who pitches in front of the Red Sox offense, who have scored more runs than any team aside from the Indians.
