Houston

After last night's action...

Team W L PCT GB E#

Houston 89 70 .560 - -
Chicago 88 70 .557 0.5 4
San Francisco 88 70 .557 0.5 4
San Diego 86 72 .544 2.5 2

It wasn't vintage Clemens, but it was keep-my-team-in-it Clemens, and against a stacked St Louis line up, that's all you can ask. 6 IP, 4 runs on 5 hits, 8 K's. Not bad for a guy in his forties. And a tip of the cap the Jeff Kent, whose 300th career home run started the scoring in the second inning, as the Colt .45's swept the winningest team in baseball. Lisa, notice I said "winningest," not "best," "winningest." There's a difference.

Remember yesterday when I said Houston was gonna need some help? Well help they got, largely in the form of one Austin Kearns.

"It was Kearns' day. He tied up the game (double in the 9th), he won the game (triple in the 11th), he saved the game (stabbed Sosa's bases-loaded line drive in the 3rd)," Dusty Baker said.

And Reds starter Luke Hudson was as advertised, issuing four walks in six innings, and somehow giving up only one run.

San Francisco lost Dustin Mohr, the game and the WC lead when Mohr tripped over the bullpen mound catching a fly ball in foul territory. As Mohr lay in heap, Kerry Robinson came in from 3rd with the winning run in the tenth. Ugh.

CBS.sportsline saw fit to name Mark Loretta and Ramon Hernandez "players of the game," somehow overlooking the fact that Boomer went 8, gave up only 3 runs and mangaged to walk Barry only once on a night when he went 0-for-3. Wells even made him look bad on a three-pitch strike out that started with a knee-buckling curve ball and ended with Barry chasing high cheese.

So now Houston does in fact control their own destiny, and are hosting the (insert your favortie derisive adjective/expletive here) Rockies. The Giants and Dodgers, who face off tomorrow, also both control their own destinies with regard to the NL West.

The first game of the SF/LA series is tomorrow night on ESPN at 10:00 PM. It's almost a moral imperative that they show the brown-and-orange face of America's favorite Page 2 columnist, isn't it?

It should be a fun weekend, people.
